Art, culture and architecture – a colourful picture
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is a place of contrasts. Today Kreuzberg presents itself with many restored Gründerzeit buildings in old splendour again – a beautiful example among many is Riehmers Hofgarten. The buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee in Friedrichshain, erected in the Stalinist confectioner’s style, offer a counterpoint to this. They bear witness to the reconstruction under socialist auspices after the Second World War. The Oberbaumbrücke bridge over the Spree, which connects the two parts of the town, is now regarded as the district’s landmark. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg offers many art spaces – for example the East Side Gallery as part of the former Berlin Wall or the art quarter Bethanien. The museum ‘Haus am Checkpoint Charlie’ also shows the history of the Wall. One highlight is undoubtedly the Jewish Museum. The building with its futuristic design is not only an outstanding piece of architecture, but also impressively shows Jewish history and culture in Germany and Berlin. Events such as the “Carnival of Cultures”, “Kreuzberg jazzt” or the “Open Air Gallery” are unmistakably part of the image of the district and the capital. But there are many other possibilities for centrally located private accommodation in Berlin – for example Apartments in Berlin-Mitte or in one of the other districts of the capital. Accommodations offered by private people connect thereby both – comfort and personal atmosphere.
